Instagram does not send every comment to the apps you connect

A comment can be visible on your post, visible to you in the app, returned by Meta if you ask for it by name, and never delivered to a single tool you have connected. We measured exactly that, and it is worth knowing about before you rely on an inbox.

When you connect Facebook or Instagram to any tool, the tool is told about new comments by a webhook: Meta sends a small message the moment somebody writes. Everything you see in a social inbox exists because one of those arrived.

What is not obvious is that the delivery is not a guarantee. Meta decides what to send, and it does not send everything.

What we measured

On a customer’s post, three comments arrived from the same account within two seconds. All three were visible on the post. All three were returned by the API when we asked for that post’s comments explicitly. And not one of them produced a webhook: no rejected signature, no server error, no late delivery. No request arrived at all, while the same endpoint processed an Instagram comment of identical shape eighteen minutes later.

Why it matters even when the missing ones are spam

Because you do not get to choose what is withheld. This time it was a bot and the gap was a favour. The same mechanism, applied to a comment that a filter misjudges, means a real customer asking a real question is invisible to your inbox and to everybody working from it. Nobody is told. Nothing logs it.

And a tool that only listens cannot discover it. Most reconciliation, where it exists at all, asks Meta about the comments it already has, to find out whether they were edited, hidden or deleted. That is blind by construction to a comment it never stored.

The only fix is to ask

The comment list of a post is available on request. Listing it and comparing it against what you hold is the only thing that can find what was never delivered. It costs one call per active post, and it finds exactly the class of thing you cannot otherwise know is missing.

• Listening alone will lose comments, in every tool, including ours before we built this.
• Whatever is withheld is withheld silently: no error to alert on.
• A reconciliation pass that lists rather than re-checks is what closes it.

If you run anything important on a connected inbox, it is a fair question to ask whoever built it: do you only listen, or do you also ask?
